TYPES OF SERVES

PERSONAL SERVICE: (CCP415.10): A person over the age of 18 and not a party to the
action may personally serve the respondent by handing them the documents. The proof of
service must be completed stating the name of the respondent that was served, the date, the
time, and the place of service and MUST be signed by the person who served the
respondent. Service is deemed complete after 30 days.


SUBSTITUTED SERVICE: (CCP415.20): If the documents to be served cannot with
reasonable diligence be personally served on the respondent, the documents may be left at
the respondent's dwelling house, usual place of abode, usual place of business, or usual
mailing address other than a United States Postal Service post office box, and must be left in
the presence of a competent member of the household or a person apparently in charge of
their office, place of business, or usual mailing address. This person must at least 18 years
of age, who shall be informed of the contents of the documents. Thereafter, the documents
must also be mailed to the respondent, first-class mail, postage prepaid, to the place where
the documents were left. Service is deemed complete after 40 days.

CERTIFIED OR REGISTERED MAIL:
 (CCP415.40): The documents may be served on the
respondent by mail if the respondent resides outside of he State of California. This type of
service requires mailing to be done by first-class mail, postage prepaid, requiring a return
receipt that must be signed by the respondent. Service is deemed complete after 40 days.

SERVICE BY PUBLICATION:  (CCP 415.50): Upon application by the petitioner to the court
and an order of the court for publication, the summons is published as provided in Section
6064 of the Government Code unless the court in its discretion, orders the publication for a
longer period. The publication normally appears once a week for four consecutive weeks.
The proof of publication provided by the newspaper serves as the proof of service when
service is done in this manner. Service is deemed complete 58 days from the forst date of
publication.
